Poker Terminology

Re-buy
This is when you get more chips whilst playing a game ( not during a hand ) and this is usually done when playing in real money or in tournaments.

Reducing
This is often looked upon badly or even rude and involves you taking chips out of the room and returning with a lower amount

Registration
This is simply when you sign upto a poker room you will be asked to fill out a form with all your details name, address etc etc

River
This is the last community card that is dealt it can also be called Fifth Street.

Round
This is when the cards are dealt and the betting that follows

Royal Flush
This is the top hand in poker and is five cards all suited and consists of the following cards 10 J Q K A

Screen Name
This is a name you have chosen to be known as in the poker room, choose one wisely as you are often stuck with it.

Self-install
This is an automatically self installing software that is downloaded from which ever poker room you decide to play in.

Server
A server is a computer that runs the poker room and sends information like cards dealt etc to all players computers

Showdown
This is when the final bet has been made and all players either show or muck their respective hand

Side Pot
This is a separate pile of chips that are created when a player has had to go all-in there may occasionally be more than one side pot in operation

Single Table Tournament
This is as the name suggests a table open to players and money from the buy in boosts the prize pool on offer, once all the seats at the table have been filled the tournament will begin

Sit Out
Different poker rooms have different rules in regards to sit outs, but basically they will hold your seat when not playing to allow you to nip to the toilet or such like, often time limits for sitting out are imposed

Small Blind
This is a bet the player sitting to the left of the dealer is obliged to make ( In Texas Hold’em and Omaha ) In Hold’em and Omaha, this is the mandatory bet required of the player to the left of the dealer.

Stakes
See buy-in.

Straight
This is a hand that had five connecting cards ie 5 6 7 8 9 in a straight the suit of the cards does not matter
