Texas Hold’em

Texas Hold’em can be best described as a game for those who are fast off the mark, any amount of players from a minimum of two upto a maximum of ten can play the game and it consists of four rounds of betting. The game begins when each player is dealt two cards, and they must use these cards in conjunction with the five Community Cards that have been dealt into the middle of the card table. each player then has to use any five cards to make up their best hand. The objective is very simple - finish with the best hand and you will take the pot!

Let's take a look at how a game of Texas Hold’em progresses

1. The player who is sat to the immediate left of the dealer posts what is known as the Small Blind bet. The next player on the left of the person who placed the Small Blind bet then has to place what is known as the Big Blind bet. Please be aware that the dealer moves to a new position after each game has been completed.

2. Two cards are then dealt to each player and these are known as the two Pocket Cards.

3. The first round can now begin and the player to the left of the Big Blind poster plays first. He/She has three options and they can either Fold, Bet or Raise. It is worth noting that in the first round, players are limited to one bet and three raises each. Players are not permitted to Check, as Blinds are bets and not antes.

4. Once the above has been completed we move onto the second round in which three community cards are dealt. This is known as the Flop. In this round of betting each player can do any of the following, Check, Fold, Call or Raise

5. Once each player has made their move we go onto the third round, in which a fourth Community Card is dealt. This is commonly known as The Turn. As you would expect a round of betting follows the turn.

6. Finally the game moves onto the fourth round, an the final Community Card is dealt, bringing the total community cards to five. This card is known as the River Card and can often be the making of that fantastic hand. The final round of betting now takes place and all of the remaining players use their Pocket Cards (these cards that are facedown on the table but known only to that player) and the five Community Cards to create the best possible five-card hand. The winner who has the best hand defined by the Hand Rankings gets the pot. Should two or more players have the same hand, they will split the pot equally between them.
