Poker Terminology

No Limit
Often indicated by the initials NL this means there is no upper limit on how much a player can bet except the amount of chips that player has on the table

Omaha
A variation of poker where every player gets dealt four facedown cards and they share five community cards. The winner has to use just two of their cards and three of their community cards.

Omaha High/Low
This is a variation of Omaha poker and the pot gets shared between the players who have the highest hand and the lowest hand.

On the button
This simply means you are the dealer, different poker rooms have different images to indicate the button

One on One
This is the same as head to head

Pair
This is when you have two cards of the same ranking ie a couple of kings, or two queen etc.

Pass
This can mean either checking or folding dependant on the situation and context.

Play Chips
These are what are used when you are playing for free, they have no value and are used simply for playing for fun.

Playing the Board
This is when you utilize ALL the community cards to make up the best hand

Pocket Cards
These are the two cards dealt to the playing at the start of the game .

Pot
This is the amount of chips that you can win in any hand

Pot Limit
This is when you can only bet upto the current amount of chips that are in the pot and is often indicated by the initials PL

Profile
This is information that a player will give about him/herself usually a list of their favorite things including hobbies, website and the such like

Rake
This is a fee that each poker room will take as a service charge to allow you to play at their venue

Raked Hand
Should a game produce a hand and a player has been dealt both cards, it doesn't matter whether you play or not as by taking part you are deemed to have qualified for the raked hand.

Raise
This is when you increase the bet amount above the amount that a previous player has made

Rank
This is simply the value of the card for example a 4 is ranked a four irrespective of its suit. When playing hi/lo games the ace can have a high or low rank
